Dr. Andy Johnson was trained in the CPU pedagogy, an early version of inquiry based course materials from the Center for Research in Math and Science Education at San Diego State University. Some time ago, Johnson asked “I wonder how much students can understand about radiation and radioactivity using inquiry methods?” This started a decade-long adventure that resulted in the IiR materials.
These materials have been developed with close examination of student ideas and learning outcomes in a trial course at Black Hills State University. We have identified numerous difficulties with students understanding radiation, atoms, and ionization by radiation.
